Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are non-surgical cosmetic treatments used to fill or replace the lost volume in static wrinkles, lines and folds that appear at rest. Unlike antiwrinkle injections, they do not affect facial muscle contraction.

Dermal fillers are used to add volume to weakened facial features and can stimulate collagen growth. They plump skin and gently lift it to restore collagen loss. They also motivate the body to create its own natural collagen and restore your face to a more natural, youthful appearance.

Dermal fillers are used to restore volume to the face, to reduce wrinkles or enlarge lips.

In our clinic we use only the highest quality products, like Juvederm produced by Allergan. Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid, which belongs to the group of non-permanent fillers. It can be completely reabsorbed and results are therefore temporary. The duration depends on the product used and on multiple factors such as sun exposure, alcohol, smoking, hormones, etc. On average the rejuvenation effect after the first hyaluronic acid treatment lasts for 9-12 months. Areas like the lips do not last as long because of constant lip movement.

Hyaluronic acid is present naturally in our bodies, and plays an important role in giving volume to the skin, shape to the eyes, and elasticity to the joints. It binds water, hydrates and softens the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can dermal fillers be used for?

Dermal fillers are mainly used in facial areas where the underlying soft tissues no longer support the skin resulting in a wrinkle, a fold or tissue atrophy. The most common areas to be treated are:

  • lips – a very common request would be to add volume to the lips
  • nasolabial folds
  • crow’s feet
  • frown lines
  • perioral lines
  • marionette lines
  • cheek augmentation
  • jaw line

What is the procedure like?

Dermal fillers are inserted under the skin by injection. To minimise the discomfort we use numbing cream and in some cases (lip augmentation) we use dental injections which significantly reduce the discomfort. Most dermal fillers contain lidocaine (anaesthetic) which also increases the comfort of the whole procedure.

Is there any downtime?

Immediately after the procedure, there will be some swelling and redness in the treated area. This will resolve within hours up to a couple of days (lips can be swollen for up to 72 hours). There might also be some bruising in the area, especially in people who generally bruise easily. This should resolve within a week.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are mild to moderate, lasting up to seven days. They include redness, pain, firmness, swelling and bumps. Dermal fillers are not recommended for people with severe allergies or a history of anaphylaxis.

Your medical history should be carefully discussed before the procedure in order to help avoid unsatisfactory results and complications.
